Cooking: Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus

Asparagus is a good thing, or at least that’s what I gather from all the foreigners I see eating it for breakfast.

Nutritious, not too heavy on calories, and it crunches nicely when you bite in — for a moment there you feel like a panda…

I spent a while figuring out the best way to eat asparagus. Pan-fry it straight? Stir-fry it with rice? In the end I decided bacon is the best match.

Hence this bacon-wrapped asparagus.

Making it isn’t much trouble. Cut the asparagus into segments and rinse them. Get a small pot of water boiling and blanch the asparagus briefly — this makes it look greener and also disinfects and cleans it.

Then take out the bacon, wrap it around the asparagus, and stick a toothpick through.

Low heat in a frying pan, start frying. You can add a little oil and sprinkle on a little seasoning — spices, black pepper, whatever works.

Then take it out of the pan.

One bite per piece is pretty good, though it does feel like a waste of toothpicks…

If you really don’t have bacon, you can just pan-fry it directly, but remember to wash it well and let it dry — no water left on it, unless you want the bottom of the pan to explode.

Oh right, shiitake mushrooms are a good match too.
