Killing WPS Linux's Sneaky Background Process

WPS recently put out a new Linux build. Looks like it’s been ported to QT5, the UI actually looks decent now, and it supports scaling too. Great news, genuinely.

But after using it for a while I ran into a problem: there’s always a wps-office process sitting in the background.

Nice. So Kingsoft brought its Windows habits over to Linux too, huh?

Killing the process is easy enough, of course…

On Ubuntu Linux, WPS installs here:

//opt/kingsoft/wps-office/office6

You’ll find an executable in there called wps-office. Just rename the damn thing as root, to something like wps-office_bak, and you’re done.

After that you won’t see it get launched anymore. Though, why does it even get launched in the first place? What is it actually doing?

If you’ve looked at it, the process is called wps-office –qingbangong

Probably some stupid cloud drive service again. But I’m pretty sure cloud drives don’t even work in WPS on Linux!

Oh right, you have to do this after every update, because the process comes right back each time.
