I Bought a Bottle of Oleophobic Coating Off Taobao and Applied It

I bought a bottle before and it turned out to be a total scam. Went back on Taobao this time and the tech seems to have moved on a fair bit, so I figured I’d try the new version.

Why bother applying oleophobic coating? Because part of the coating inside my phone’s notch has worn off… no idea why, maybe I wipe it too much?

Three things in the box: the oleophobic coating, a bottle of cleaning solution (which is just alcohol), and a pack of wipes.

Applying it is dead simple:

  • Wipe the screen down with alcohol first, get it clean
  • Then apply the coating, spread it once, let it dry for 1 minute, apply again, dry another minute, repeat about 3 times total
  • If you can, hit it with a heat gun — works even better

I tested it out and this coating is way better than the last one. It genuinely repels oil, and it seems to last a while too — at least a week.

The official claim is one to two months depending on usage. Hope it holds that long. Nothing beats electroplating of course, but it’s not like we can electroplate at home…

I actually tried this stuff too…

It does repel water… but it’s not slippery enough.

So the new Taobao oleophobic coating is actually worth a shot. If your phone’s coating is gone, give it a try.
