The Stupidly Simple Fix for Sony PHA-2 Not Producing Sound on Ubuntu Linux

This is a stupid problem. A genuinely stupid one.

It’s so stupid I’m saying it twice.

I have a Sony PHA-2 portable DAC/amp. Based on my previous experience with it, this thing has never given me trouble on Linux.

But now it does. The problem: after using it for a while, it just stops making sound.

  1. It’s detected fine.
  2. The parameters are fine.
  3. ALSA and PulseAudio are fine.
  4. The kernel is fine.

Everything is fine. It just won’t output audio. I fiddled with every setting, every knob, every goddamn thing, and still nothing. Reinstalling the OS fixes it, but within a month the sound dies again every time. Annoying as hell. I even bought a FiiO E17 to hold me over.

Then one day I saw this.

What does that MM under the left knob mean? Googled it. Apparently it stands for Mute.

Wait. Mute? So I pressed the M button like the manual says.

Sound came back.

Why the hell did you mute me for no reason, and what’s even more fucked is that my volume dial on top can move freely and it won’t auto-unmute. What are you even doing?

Thinking back, it’s probably because I shut down the machine while the sound card was running, and it auto-enters Mute.

Anyway, problem solved.
