Wandan! Wo Bei Meinv Baowei Le (完蛋!我被美女包围了) Review

The Game Is Huge, But It's Not the Game That's Huge

A game called Dougan, I Was Surrounded by Beauties! (完蛋,我被美女包围了!) suddenly blew up, and the reason it blew up is, to me, completely baffling. Mostly it’s some dumb meme like “give Haohao a home,” and the game itself doesn’t strike me as anything new. Live-action dating sims were already a thing in Japan last century, the AV industry has put out similar stuff, and across the whole AVG space a live-action text game called The Sealed Shibuya was huge years ago.

Not to mention localized Chinese titles like The Invisible Guardian or Leap to the Thirteenth Room, which already pulled off results that were maybe passable. So why did Dougan, I Was Surrounded by Beauties! suddenly blow up again?

Let’s start with the game itself. Dougan, I Was Surrounded by Beauties! is a textbook live-action dating sim: you pick branches, the story follows, and you unlock the endings you need. The difference is each chapter has an affection requirement, which adds a bit of difficulty and gives it a little “exploration and replayability.” As for the story, I can only call it grade-school level. Japanese harem anime isn’t even this blunt. I don’t know if the protagonist has a giant dick or raging hormones or a face that’s a crime to look at, but he’s worth every beauty throwing herself at him from every angle, to the point it gets gross. Scene transitions are choppy because of filming costs, the story never pulls you in, and if you watch it as an awkward episodic drama it’s just barely tolerable.

The choice logic isn’t great either. You’re either going off stereotypes about the heroines or off complete nonsense, and most of the time you have no idea what to pick without a guide. You can’t play it using real social experience at all.

And the most unhinged part is the system. From what I’ve observed, the game quietly goes online. Meaning video playback isn’t purely local, it connects to a server and transfers data. That’s why fast-forwarding stutters and drags, and sometimes it times out and won’t jump to the next choice. I don’t know why that’s necessary. Is it to stop people from farming Little Bears to vote for heroines?

The soundtrack… honestly I remember none of it. They later added a theme song called “Love Acceleration,” a pop R&B thing. It’s okay, but it’s the same TikTok-bait style everyone uses. The casting, though, deserves some real discussion…

The initial cast is actually pretty good. The leads can act, and there’s a lot of regional flavor. Shen Huixing looks like she’s from Henan at a glance, and sure enough, she is. Most of the cast fits their characters, and that’s one of the few places the game gives you a “feeling.” No matter how cliché the story is, chatting with pretty women and looking at them a while does feel okay. Especially “Haohao’s mom” — those proportions are hard for a virgin to resist.

Looking at the whole thing, the production quality isn’t good. It’s a passing grade at best. You will not get a real “romance feeling” out of this game. All you can do is look at the decent-looking heroines and interact with them in a limited way. That’s it.

So why is it so huge? Four words: content value.

Beyond the “give Haohao a home” meme, the game is a goldmine for streamers. And for the top few, the content isn’t just the game anymore, it’s everything around it.

Take a VTuber called “Putong Xiaoli”… no, “Tian Dou Fa Ya Le.” Her stream of this game maxed out the content. Xiao Lu’s “It’s you?” and “So you two know each other” instantly elevated the whole thing. A certain shark-adjacent streamer rode the same wave, and combined with the fishing chat, it turned into post-modern performance art.

Driven by all that streaming content, the game’s popularity kept climbing. At this point whether the game is good doesn’t matter. Dougan, I Was Surrounded by Beauties! has become an internet trend like bubble tea back then or raw cola later. If you don’t get it, you’re out. Man, what can I say? You are no longer an elite surfer M3?

The devs then struck while the iron was hot and put out the DLC Room Heartbeat, adding three new heroines. It’s obviously worse than the base game. The story is even more brain-dead, the interactive environment is cut down to “the room,” outdoor time drops massively, and the individual events between heroines are fewer — feels like a budget cut. The three new heroines’ looks are also awkward. Not that they’re ugly — the makeup team is the problem. None of the three match the characters they play: a discount Liu Boxin, a deluxe Dong Xuelian, and a big-titty version of Honor of Kings streamer Ling’er. The déjà vu is practically spilling off the screen, and I couldn’t get into it anymore… The one constant, the supporting guy “Lao Liu,” became the DLC’s floor…

Anyway, I still can’t understand from the game’s own merits how Dougan, I Was Surrounded by Beauties! got huge. I can only chalk it up to the internet wave, plus netizens and streamer content pushing it along, making it a brief fad and a small hit. And the DLC proves this kind of success can’t be easily replicated.

As for all the other studios copying it badly, I don’t think they’ll get anywhere. Just because you throw a bunch of hot women preening and throwing themselves at the player doesn’t mean people will buy in. Remember, there’s a thing called AV — free to pirate, fully immersive, and way cheaper than this crap. And if you actually wanted to make a real “romance-feeling” sim through this medium, the budget wouldn’t be less than a film. Obviously not worth it.

That said, I did get a lot of fun out of this game, mostly from the stream content and memes online, and of course the cutest, Xiao Lu a.k.a. the ad queen, dancing to Heartbeat Spectrum. The game blew up, but it’s not the game that blew up — it’s all the content around it.
