Kana-chan no Kanzen Kyuuketsu Manual (かなちゃんの完全吸血マニュアル) Review

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this on the blog more than once—the story of the very first eroge I ever played.

I was in sixth grade. I found it on a disc I’d bought called Recoil. It wasn’t even a compilation disc, just a single-game bootleg with a cover that didn’t list anything extra, yet somehow there were other games stored on it too.

I can’t remember the title. All I remembered were the characters for “complete bloodsucking.” You’d open it and first there’d be two women doing yuri stuff, then the heroine meets the protagonist, and she suddenly starts going down on his pixelated crotch… and then it cuts to “that kind” of scene.

Bear in mind I was in sixth grade. The most explicit thing I’d seen up to that point was probably some TV shopping channel ad for a bra. This was way too much for me. Right when I was completely losing control and about to keep watching, I heard footsteps approaching from somewhere in the house. I panicked and hard-rebooted the PC. When my mother came in and saw the blue disk-check screen, she thought it was weird, and I just awkwardly told her the computer had frozen.

Years passed and I never forgot that game. I didn’t understand a word of Japanese back then, and I remember the text was all mojibake anyway. All I knew was that the heroine was called “Kana.” I kept wanting to find out what the story actually was. I did eventually manage to search up the title, but it was too old—no resources left anywhere. It became a permanent regret.

But things always turn around. A while back I stumbled on someone who’d reuploaded the game files and a disc image. I got my hands on it again, heart pounding. To run it, I set up a pure-as-hell Win98SE emulator through 86Box. As the game booted up, the dust on those ancient memories got brushed off once more.

The full title is Kanachan no Kanzen Kyuuketsu Manual—“Kana-chan’s Complete Bloodsucking Manual.” It was made by the now-defunct Segue Laboratory and released on May 15, 1998. Character art by Motofumi Takaoka, who’s still drawing porn today, incidentally—look him up if you’re curious.

The game only runs on Win9X, and 86Box handles that perfectly through hardware emulation. Unusually, it doesn’t even need a Japanese locale to run properly—no need to mount some custom font library or anything. The interface is dead simple, pure text operations, and it only gives you three save slots. The settings menu is sparse too. It doesn’t even have a fast-forward function.

Now for the main event: the story. Honestly, it’s not long at all, and pretty simple. The heroine Kana’s family are vampires who need to drink blood to survive. At the start she gets bitten by her older sister—that’s the yuri scene I remembered. The sister explains that their kind need blood to live, but the act of sucking blood also produces sexual desire, making them want to push the other person down.

Then Kana asks her sister: “Who was your first time with?”

The sister answers completely calmly: “With Dad.”

Kana is equally calm: “Wow, with Dad. That’s nice.”

Meanwhile I’m sitting in front of the screen losing my mind. What kind of high-level plot development is this?

Next Kana talks with her mother, who lays out some vampire common knowledge for her—including the post-bite horniness—and also mentions how she drank blood with her boyfriend (now Kana’s father) and then they went at it, and one thing led to another.

Then Kana goes to school, some boy hits on her, and she invites him over to study. While studying, Kana as a vampire decides to make her move—she pins the boy down and bites him. After the bite, they both get aroused, and one thing leads to another (this is where I saw the pixelated crotch-eating part). After some intense creampie action, Kana and the boy get dressed and decide to start dating. The game ends…

Of course, it doesn’t actually end there. There’s a second playthrough and a third. In the second, when you get back to the conversation with the sister where she says her first time was with Dad, a new option appears, triggering a flashback to the sister’s first time with him, which adds some special CGs. Basically, she’s taking a bath with Dad, he suddenly bites her, she gets turned on, and just as foreplay is about to move to penetration, Mom walks in and stops them (surprisingly ethical!). The third playthrough is when Kana talks to her mother—the mother mentions the story of meeting Dad for the first time, and that triggers a flashback too. This one actually has a proper penetration CG scene, showing Mom and Dad when they were young.

That’s all the content. I was surprised to find the game is “fully voiced”—literally every line, including the narration. Unfortunately, I can’t find a voice cast list. The official word is that it’s undisclosed.

The art style holds up surprisingly well even by today’s standards. It even supports 800x600 resolution—remember, this is a 1998 game. Plenty of eroge from 2008 still used that resolution. Combined with full voice acting, in some ways it was ahead of its time.

The game isn’t flawless. The biggest—and most absurd—problem is the whole “vampire” premise. It gets talked about from start to finish, yet there’s not a single CG of anyone actually sucking blood. It’s all tell, no show. If nobody told you, you’d never guess this was a vampire family. And the game never gives the heroine’s family any vampire traits—no sharp teeth or anything. So it feels like the “bloodsucking” setting was bolted on purely to justify the fucking. Probably a lot of pre-2000 eroge had stricter moral regulations, so incomplete settings wouldn’t pass review. The Dad scene CG got cut for ethical reasons, after all. Unlike modern games—forget Dad, you can fuck your grandfather if you want. Step-sister, blood sister, whatever.

Playing it again after all these years, I feel like I’ve fulfilled a childhood dream. I have to marvel—my first porn game ever was this insane. Yuri, incest, vampire pure love, all kinds of bizarre setups I never would’ve imagined.

My second eroge, by the way, was Joshi Kousei Sei Nikki, from one of those Gamez88 bootleg discs. I actually bought that disc for the hard-disk version of Sangokushi Eiyuuden 2, another game I still can’t find to this day—maybe it was a doujin thing? Or maybe it was just Shuu Sakura or Kizaku? I remember even less about that one, because without a tool like North Star the Japanese text wouldn’t display at all.

But you never know—maybe one day I’ll run into that game again.
