Choosing a WiFi Module for the X250

A while back I swapped the WiFi module in my ThinkPad X250 for one without an FRU. Recently I got my hands on a module that does have an FRU, but it’s the one for the X260.

So is there any difference between the two?

The answer is yes, just a little.

After installing the FRU module, WiFi no longer defaults to off at boot. Signal feels a lot more stable to me, and I no longer get the situation where some 5G network just refuses to show up.

Bluetooth control still doesn’t work, though. With the old module, the FN button could toggle both WiFi and Bluetooth at once. Now it still can’t.

So if the ThinkPad X250 no longer has a WiFi whitelist, you’re still better off using a module with the right FRU — after all, those are Lenovo’s own.
