Swapping a BCM94356Z into a ThinkPad X250

Since the ThinkPad X250 no longer has a whitelist on the WiFi slot, can you swap in a Broadcom card?

Rather than just mouthing off online, better to try it myself…

Yes, you can. It works just as well as the Intel 8260 did. On Ubuntu it’s detected and usable.

Except… Broadcom’s Linux drivers are absolute shit. Install the STA version and it hangs; install the open-source one and performance is crap. No idea why Chiphell was unanimously saying Intel wireless cards are garbage and Broadcom, as the old veteran, is the shit. Sure, it’s the shit—but being hostile to Linux users still makes it a no-go.

In the end I swapped back to the Intel 8260. Guess this is good news for Hackintosh or Windows users.
