Living with Audio-Technica IM03 Cable Replacement AT-HDC5/1.2
Audio-Technica IM03 Cable Replacement with AT-HDC5/1.2
It’s been almost two years since the Audio-Technica IM03 arrived… I actually really like these buds. At first I thought they sounded muffled, but later, whether they got burned in or something else happened, they ended up being the most “balanced across all three frequency bands” earphones I own.
Treble is clear, mids are dense, and while the bass is a bit light, I personally lean toward a cleaner sound anyway — if I want bass, I’ve got the IE80. So these became my first choice whenever I’m in a bad mood.
The IM03 I bought was a Japanese-market unit, no warranty. I used to worry it might suddenly die like my late, lamented TF10 — and that day finally came, though it wasn’t within any so-called warranty period.
What broke was the cable. Plenty of people trash the stock IM03 cable and say it should’ve been replaced long ago, but that cable is waaaay…………too expensive, so I never brought myself to buy it. Now I had a reason, and the price had dropped quite a bit too.

The packaging was pretty legit when it arrived. AT-HDC5/1.2 is the model number, swapping it on was a breeze, and the earphones came back to life immediately after the cable change!
A lot of people say this cable is way better than the stock one. I agree…………
On the build-quality front.
The connectors both have the Audio-Technica logo, there’s some really nice metal on them, and the cable material is soft but not uncomfortable — no skin irritation like the stock cable gave me. Clearly new materials were used.

Many people say the sound improves after a cable swap. I put it on and went straight to listening to voice audio, not music, and I also discovered a stunning fact: I can no longer be bothered to be an idiot who grabs some new audiophile-mysticism gadget and immediately picks out a few songs to listen to with eyes closed for differences. Even if you asked me to feel for them, I couldn’t — the stock cable is already broken…
Still, plugged into the ZX1, the sound does seem easier to drive. Maybe that’s one of the perks.
Anyway, the earphones are fixed. Good news all around.
