NetGear R6300 Router + Fan

The unit I use is a NetGear R6300. It’s been running without a reboot for a long time and it’s been pretty stable, but…

It runs hot as hell!

So I started thinking about how to cool it down, and just as I was about to search, a coworker next to me said there are ready-made kits online.

Sure enough, a search on eBay turned some up… and they were cheap, so I went and bought one.

What arrived was basically a fan + 3M tape + a dust filter.

Installation is just screwing it on…

Then you stick it on with the 3M tape, but you definitely have to screw it in too — that little strip of tape alone isn’t enough.

On to the results:

  1. It’s literally silent.
  2. It hasn’t overheated since — it’s a crappy fan, but it’s plenty for a router.
  3. No side effects, and it keeps dust out too.

(And yes, I’ll admit it: I put this router on the desk of the girl sitting across from me so she could use it as decoration. She said the lights look nice…)
