My Sennheiser IE 80 Repair Saga

I bought Sennheiser IE80 a bit over a year ago. After a year of listening it finally died… pretty sure one of the right-ear drivers is gone.

Good thing I bought the China official version back then… plugged it in, seems the warranty is longer than a year, should be two years, so I went straight to the warranty claim.

The number on the official site goes to a Shenzhen office or wherever… after getting through, the guy on the other end, thick southern accent and all, told me to write a note myself, describing the problem with the earphones clearly, plus my address, and make sure to include the following:

  1. The earphone box
  2. The purchase invoice
  3. All the earphone accessories (the more complete the better)

See that? Buy the China official version and your warranty still needs the whole kit… otherwise you’re screwed. Luckily I have that habit.

After mailing it over, two days later they called, confirmed there was a problem, needed to send it back to the factory, max about a month.

Anyway, this is what it looked like when I shipped it back:

And then nothing…

At some point I realized a whole month had passed and it was mid-August, so I called to ask why it wasn’t fixed yet…

They said they didn’t know, we already sent it back to the factory, yeah we said a month but a month is counted in working days, so keep waiting, or how about I give you the factory’s number and you chase them too?

I thought about it and decided to just keep waiting, and finally on my birthday the repaired earphones arrived.

Even though they said repair, repair, factory repair, I took a look and found they’d given me a new pair.

Alright, buying the China official version was the right call after all.
