ANGRYsearch: A Knockoff Everything for Linux

ANGRYsearch is a knockoff wheel of the Windows search tool Everything.

Calling it a wheel is a bit unfair, honestly. Everything’s whole trick is tied to the NTFS index, so nothing on Linux or Mac OSX really matches it (at least that’s how it looks right now). ANGRYsearch is more of an imitation, a knockoff of Everything’s search approach.

Installation seemed pretty simple:

sudo apt install python3-pyqt5 xdg-utils
git clone https://github.com/DoTheEvo/ANGRYsearch
cd ANGRYsearch
chmod +x install.sh && sudo ./install.sh

If you’re not on Ubuntu, check the project page for how to install on other distros:

Then again, this thing is a knockoff. On first launch you have to build an index…

Yes, build the index yourself. The official word is that an SSD only needs a minute and an HDD only needs two, but either way you still have to build it. You can also pick which icons it uses while indexing.

Once it’s done you can search… and the speed really is comparable to Everything.

Except, well, all of it depends on your index…

And you have to update the index manually. So can it update automatically? Sure, schedule it with a cron job… the software ships with its own database update process.

crontab -e

Add this inside:

0 */6 * * * /usr/share/angrysearch/angrysearch_update_database.py

That updates every six hours. Change the time up front if you want it faster; go read up on cron usage.

sudo apt install python3-gobject xdotool

With that you get a notification popup after each update.

In the end I still think this whole approach is dumb as hell. I’d rather just search from the terminal. I’m deleting this stupid wheel.

sudo rm -r /usr/share/angrysearch /usr/bin/angrysearch /usr/share/applications/angrysearch.desktop
rm -rf ~/.cache/angrysearch

And that’s it. Get out of here, garbage!
