Setting Up BBR on a Server Kernel

BBR is a new TCP congestion control algorithm researched and developed at Google. More details here.

First, check your Linux kernel version.

uname -a

It works on Linux 4.9 and above. On Ubuntu you’re probably better off using this PPA.

Next:

vim /etc/sysctl.conf

Put this in it:

net.core.default_qdisc = fq
net.ipv4.tcp_congestion_control = bbr

Save it, then:

sysctl -p

Check BBR’s status.

lsmod | grep bbr

For Linode and OpenVZ there’s a different method.

That’s it.
