Rebirth: The God-Tier PUA Chronicles

Back in high school I read web novels every day. A lot of them were… okay, I guess. Some were way too terminally online, but at least they told a coherent story with a distinct flavor. If it was entertaining I didn’t nitpick the literary quality, and if it was actually serious I wouldn’t treat it like a power fantasy.

Man, though, seriously written web novels are rare. Most are drowning in internet slang and come with their own snark. A little self-aware snark in a literary work isn’t necessarily bad—it can add flavor—but overdo it and it gets ugly.

I remember two web novels I read: one called Sanguo Houhei Zhuan and another called How I Picked Up the Campus Belle. The latter is actually decent—I’d recommend it, it’s solid for a school romance. The former just made me shake my head… I bring them up because they share a trait: both love their own snark.

What does “self-snark” look like? Basically, while narrating, the protagonist is constantly muttering bullshit in his head, and that muttering gets mixed with god-view descriptions.

Writing like that is easy and fun, sure—fine for a web novel. But in a serious literary work it’s disgusting. And clearly, How I Picked Up the Campus Belle does it well, while the disgusting ones are Sanguo Houhei Zhuan and this game called Inakagan.

The full title of Inakagan is Inakagan Kiseki no Iki Shinriki de Junpoku Musume ni Sei Chūnyū♥. The meaning of that second part… you can probably guess from the kanji. I had some expectations going in because it’s from Clockup, and Clockup has put out plenty of stuff that looks like a nukige on the surface but has deeper meaning underneath. Given the premise, I figured this one might have some substance too…

Wrong. Dead wrong.

Let’s start with the setup. The protagonist is a 42-year-old dude. At the beginning, he’s a civil servant, but word gets out that he’s about to be fired. He loses his job, and his wife—who he met through an arranged marriage and never really loved—says, “You don’t have a government job anymore? Let’s divorce.” His only daughter says, “Ugh, Dad, you’re gross, stay away from me.” The guy wants to have one last pity fuck with his wife before they split. After they got married, the only time they did it was the one time that produced their daughter—after that, she never let him touch her again. So even the goodbye sex doesn’t happen. Wife and daughter run off, job’s gone. The dude goes and gets wasted, drinks until he’s broke, and gets kicked out. He passes by a shrine (or temple, I forget), and with the last of his money he makes a wish. And then shit gets wild: the god of this rundown place shows up, says he felt the guy’s misery, and decides to help him out. Cue a flash of white light…

When the guy opens his eyes, he’s changed. No longer a 42-year-old dude—now he’s a pretty-boy handsome motherfucker. His identity changed too: he’s now the god that some mountain village worships.

He’s confused, and then a voice-over speaks—it’s the god from the shrine where he made his wish.

“Yo, kid. You made a wish, I saw how pathetic you were, so I’m gonna grant it.”

Then comes a bunch of blabber explaining that the guy was reborn into the body of a handsome dude who just happens to be the avatar of a god worshipped by the villagers in this backwater. So the protagonist went from middle-aged loser to literal kami-sama.

Now he’s got looks, money, superpowers—he can bang whoever he wants.

Then the voice-over pipes up again: “Boy, now that you’re a god, you need to find a ‘kamimukae’—a god bride.” (Like the river god taking a wife, I guess.)

Scene change: the protagonist gets set up with an identity and transfers into a school in some mountain village. His goal: find a “wife” at this school.

Three candidates appear: a female classmate, a female teacher, and a young girl.

So you’d think the game would have some proper development, maybe a romance? Hell no—the game turns into Taobao shopping mode.

From there the plot is super formulaic: some filler dialogue, then one day you’re bored and the voice-over asks, “Who do you wanna bang today?”

screenshot.13.jpg

You pick a character, and before long you’re inexplicably banging. The protagonist is a god, after all—if the girl isn’t willing, you can just use a little divine power.

After you’re done, the game gives you an option to rate your impression of the heroine. Like, is she wife material? A fuckbuddy? Or get the hell out after you’re done?

screenshot.22.jpg

And that’s the entire structure of the game: pick who to bang -> decide whether to use divine power to force it -> rate her afterward… over and over and over. No narrative continuity, no real story, just bang bang bang.

Kinda like Taobao shopping, right? Order a girl to bang, then it asks if you wanna leave a review.

Later on, the voice-over suddenly asks who you’re gonna pick as your “god bride.” And here’s the kicker: if you give a positive review every time and stay too loyal, the game just… ends. The protagonist solemnly declares he doesn’t want to be a god anymore—he just wants to find a girl and live a normal life, and he doesn’t want to knock them up to birth “god children” as some “god bride.”

screenshot.33.jpg

That tonal shift left me baffled. The guy suddenly turns virtuous, and the game just ends.

I wondered if I’d done something wrong. Was the correct route to flirt with every girl without committing, become a true god, take three “god brides,” and live a debauched life? Holy shit, that’s so not politically correct.

But regardless of the ending, I’m not touching this game again. Why? Because the self-snark in this game is disgusting.

screenshot.7.jpg

Even after being reborn as a god, the protagonist’s inner voice is still that of a creepy loser. No matter who he sees—teacher, student—he mentally undresses them first, monologuing about everything from black tights to ass. Ugh, it made me sick. Can’t your descriptions be a little more elegant? More serious? More literary? Even just a bit more stylish? I always thought this kind of writing only existed in third-rate Chinese web novels, but Japan does it too… It instantly drags the game down. It’s already a nukige, and with writing this low it’s impossible to get hard. Nukige writing should be a little more literary and intense—the creepy inner feelings should be left to the virgins sitting in front of the screen. If you’re spewing all that in the text, you’re hogging all the snark. What am I supposed to snark about?

screenshot.17.jpg

All in all, this game is completely nonsensical: nonsensical setting, nonsensical development, nonsensical sex scenes, nonsensical plot structure, and that nonsensical “safe avoidance” screen… After playing it, I felt nonsensical too.

screenshot.11.jpg

Well, I can’t really call it nonsensical—because this kind of formulaic content, I always thought you could only find in Chinese web novels, the bad ones. I never imagined Japanese writers could produce this stuff…

If this were serialized on a Chinese web novel site, the title would probably be Rebirth: The God-Tier PUA Chronicles.
