I Just Had the Most Unforgettable White Fungus Soup of My Life!
A few nights ago, out of nowhere, I got a message on Line from the female teacher:
“Help… I… I’m starving to death…”

Her parents had gone off on a trip to Hong Kong, leaving her home alone. I was working overtime that day, and right before I could clock out, this message came in. Naturally, I got worried—was she so hungry she was about to pass out from low blood sugar?
So I drove over as fast as I could, and when I arrived, I found her happily cooking away…
“It’s called a little trick—I wanted you to come taste my cooking.”
That’s how she explained the message later.
She was humming a tune while chopping up a pile of mysterious black stuff.
“What’s that?”
“Wood ear mushrooms!”
“And what are those green bits next to it?”
“Cucumber!”
“What are you making?”
“Wood ear salad with cucumber! Now get out of the way!”
Then she brought out a small pot of hot oil with some dark bits floating in it…
She poured the hot oil over the wood ear and cucumber, and it sizzled like a branding iron on pig skin.
“Alright, alright! Get out—I don’t want to see that weird look on your face.”
She shooed me out of the kitchen.
A little while later, three dishes were on the table…
One was presumably the wood ear salad with cucumber, another looked like fish soup, and the last was white fungus and lotus seed porridge.
I figured the wood ear salad couldn’t be that bad, so I took a bite…

She looked at me with expectant eyes, asking “Is it good?”
“Uh…” I said after swallowing, “did you add salt?”
“…Oh no, I forgot…”
“And what was that oil you poured on?”
“Sichuan peppercorn oil.”
“Did you add vinegar?”
“Oh… I forgot that too. Let me go get the vinegar!”
“Stop, stop, stop, stop.”
I waved her off…
“Then try this fish soup.”
Looking at the bowl of fish soup, the broth had turned white—it must have been simmering for quite a while, so it should at least be drinkable…
I took a sip… and saw that expectant look on her face again…
“Did you… marinate it?”
“Mm-hmm!” She nodded vigorously.
“Did you… marinate it with Shaoxing wine?”
“Mm-hmm!” Still nodding like crazy.
“How much Shaoxing wine did you use?”
“Uh… two or three drops? I didn’t dare use more…”
“……”
She seemed to realize something… and immediately pushed another bowl of white fungus soup toward me…
“Here, drink this, drink this.”
“No, no, no.”
Who knows what was missing from this bowl…
“Don’t be like that, just drink it…”
“No, I’m not hungry.”
“Drink it!”
She suddenly picked up the bowl and leaned in close, pinning me down like something out of a kabedon scene…
“I’ve been slaving away for ages—you dare not drink it? Drink!”
Looking at the bowl in front of me, it seemed normal enough, so I figured I’d give it a try…

I took a sip…
It tasted like dishwater. It was clearly white fungus, there were lotus seeds, the color was right—so why did it taste like dishwater…
“Did you add sugar?”
“Sugar makes you fat!”
“Did you wash the white fungus?”
“Isn’t it clean when you buy it?”
“What seasoning did you put in the soup?”
“Nothing at all! That’s the original! Flavor!”
I was completely done for…
I decided to check what ingredients she had in the house to salvage this dinner, but the moment I opened the fridge, I was stunned…

…………….
In the end, dinner concluded with me re-cooking that pot of white fungus soup, plus some cherry tomatoes and bread from the store downstairs. By the time we finished, it was past ten, and she wanted me to stay the night.
I flatly refused—I had to go home and play Riddle Joker.
Even though I ended up eating something else, I have to admit: that was the most unforgettable white fungus soup I’ve ever had. In terms of how bad it tasted, that is.
