Onii-chan Is Done For! (And So Am I)

I’d been wanting to buy the original manga for a while, but the tankoubon were too expensive so I never picked one up. This time I was just rounding out an order and grabbed one volume:

Onii-chan wa Oshimai! (お兄ちゃんはおしまい)

There’s actually an official Chinese version of this manga too, titled 《不做欧尼酱了》. Sure, “おしまい” in that title does carry the sense of “quitting / throwing in the towel,” but after reading it, the original manga seems to use it with that mocking, teasing “he’s done for, he’s finished” flavor as well…

Anyway, once the manga arrived I finally had time to read it. It’s the first tankoubon, so the content is neither too much nor too little, and I was genuinely surprised by how good it was.

The plot is pretty simple: a science-minded little sister turns her “worthless brother who’s addicted to eroge” into a girl, and a whole series of stories unfolds from there. It’s a gag manga, but there’s also a bit of “helping a shut-in otaku understand women” in it — light and fun, with plenty of up-to-date references.

And by the middle-to-late part of the manga, the male lead (?) — the brother — seems to enjoy being a girl more and more…

All in all, it reads much better than the other brother character in Umaru-chan. That manga still has me sniffling every time I read it — I really feel for that brother.

I figure a lot of people have already read the online version for free, but I personally still love tankoubon; both the print quality and the overall production are far better than domestic comics.

The tankoubon also include two chapters released separately — very short, of course.

Looking forward to volume 2.
