I'm the handsomest guy in the world, nobody's better looking than me

Luo Yonghao wants to make a Smartisan phone. Whether the guy can actually pull it off is anyone’s guess, but the blind self-confidence he’s been radiating has already seared my poor overworked eyes.

All the mockery just brings him more attention. Sometimes I wonder—Luo Yonghao isn’t a total idiot, so what if he actually nails this phone thing? Won’t he get mobbed by everyone who doubted him? And wouldn’t he have given people ammunition while paying a steep price himself?

Then I looked into what he’s been saying, and it hit me. Could we call this the “Luo-style language trap”?

First: Fat Luo says, “My phone is the best, everything else is garbage.”

Then: People ask, “What if your phone isn’t the best?”

So: Fat Luo says, “Then I’ll fix it, fix it until it’s the best. My phone is the best either way.”

Therefore: Whether the Smartisan phone succeeds or fails after launch, Luo Yonghao has plenty of room to maneuver. Success needs no explanation. If the phone turns out terrible, Luo Yonghao can still say his phone is the best—because he just hasn’t fixed it to that point yet. And he can use that to kick off a fresh round of flame wars and boost his exposure.

All the current bragging is purely to grab eyeballs and raise expectations. The strategy makes sense, but I still find it weirdly disgusting. At first Luo Yonghao seemed like a real maverick… then I read his autobiography and it felt all style and no substance… and this Smartisan phone business shows his true nature even more clearly…

Still, this “Luo-style language trap” does have its uses. Look—at least with this, I can say anything I want.

Even though I’m an ugly-as-sin loser, thanks to Teacher Luo’s little system, I can loudly declare, “I’m the handsomest guy in the world, nobody’s better looking than me.”

I know someone will challenge me: “Handsome my ass, even Pan Changjiang looks better than you.”

See, aren’t I exercising every day? I just haven’t tuned my body to handsome yet! Anyway, I’m the handsomest guy in the world, and nobody’s better looking than me. That’s the point.

Thanks, Teacher Luo, for helping me find my confidence.
