Applying for and Installing WeChat ETC

A friend sent me an invite recently saying WeChat had rolled out an ETC module that lets you pay directly through WeChat, so I figured why not and applied for one.

The application fee is 100 yuan. What showed up is this thing.

Installation is dead simple: stick it on the windshield, quickly insert and pull out the card, and once the indicator says “Bluetooth on,” activate the ETC with the WeChat mini-program on your phone.

Except this dumbass mini-program has Bluetooth detection issues, so every time I had to toggle my phone’s Bluetooth and GPS off and on repeatedly before it would finally connect.

Finally got it working. You can also register for invoices upfront and get rewards, though I honestly have no idea what those are good for.

Oh, and be careful when sticking the ETC on — my wife did it, and it ended up crooked.
