A Failed System Migration

My X250’s Linux system used to live on an NGFF Plextor SSD. Now I wanted to swap that SSD for a 240 GB Transcend, so being the lazy person I am, I had to do a system migration.

Migrating a system isn’t actually hard. Back up the old system as an archive, or just copy it directly, then fix the UUIDs it mounts by.

Surface Pro 4

The Surface Pro 3 spent a good long while as my handheld, but the newer Surface Pro 4 eventually came out. Not a huge upgrade, but since I spend more time on this thing than on my desktop, I figured I owed myself the nicer one and went for it.

Overall there isn’t much difference between the two machines — mostly just better specs.

Ten no Sora Retrospect (天ノ空レトロスペクト) Review

I wonder if anyone else is like me and loves fairy tales.

Sure, fairy tales are supposed to be stories for kids. I’m not a kid anymore, but I still crave that kid-style kind of story…

Ancient legends, gods in the sky, princes and princesses, forests and sunlight, and cute flat-chested skinny twintail little girls you just want to scoop up into your arms…

So yeah, I like fairy-tale-style stories, and visual novels too. Of course this has nothing to do with being a lolicon. Nothing at all. Really, nothing.

Enkou Shoujo ~Rikubu-bu Yukki no Baai~ (円交少女 ~陸上部ゆっきーの場合~) Review

In high school I heard something. In the class next door to mine, there was a girl who would have sex with people for money.

“Look, that’s her.” My deskmate pointed at the back of a girl from the neighboring class and told me she was the lead of this “school secret” he’d described to me before.

Honestly, I saw her face later. Not pretty, thick lips, but skinny enough, fair-skinned, ponytail, always laughing about something.

My main reaction was: I could not believe she would do something like that.

Installing GCC 5.2 on Linux Kernel 4.3 to Fix VMware

A while back I upgraded to kernel 4.2 because of a wireless issue. That got fixed, but then 4.2 brought new problems of its own.

First was the speaker popping on boot that’s specific to ThinkPad users. It showed up in early 4.2 kernels and was later patched.

Which is useless to me now, since we’re on 4.3 anyway. So I bumped the kernel to 4.3 via Ubuntu’s Mainline PPA, and after that VMware started telling me it couldn’t find GCC 5.2.

Side note: VMware China ran a 80% off promo for Singles’ Day, so I finally bought a legit license. And now you’re telling me it doesn’t work? Not acceptable.

Koi x Shin Ai Kanojo (恋×シンアイ彼女) Review

I didn’t really want to play Koikari (恋×シンアイ彼女) at first, for two reasons:

One, I didn’t like the premise. That kind of school romance drama looks like a sleep aid just from the description.

Two, I’m not a fan of Niijima Yuu, the writer everyone keeps hyping up.

I think Hatsuyuki Sakura (初雪樱) is a decent game, but this guy Niijima Yuu’s scenario writing really doesn’t impress me. Add in his work on Kisaragi Kinsei, and it pretty much confirms my judgment.

VGA switcher / wallet from Amazon US

Didn’t buy anything for Double 11 since I was already broke from building the NAS earlier. So it was just small stuff this time.

First up, a VGA signal switcher for work. Taobao special, 20 yuan. I initially assumed it needed power, then found out it’s dead simple — no power required, it’s just a switch that flips the VGA lines. Works fine. Slightly disappointing that it isn’t powered, but hey, at least my several machines can finally share one monitor.

Shizuku no Oto -fall into poison- (しずくのおと -fall into poison-) Review

So here’s how I stumbled onto this game: I saw some foreigner streaming it on YouTube, in English, of course.

I didn’t actually watch the gameplay. He’d only gotten as far as the OP, and honestly the OP is pretty damn good. It’s also pretty obvious from the OP that this is a horror game. More importantly, the Japanese lyrics told me this was probably an English-localized Japanese visual novel. Curious, I looked around for info on it and found basically nothing—some stream VODs and that’s about it.

That got me curious enough to want to play it. I looked everywhere and came up empty except for Steam.

So I bought it off the game’s Steam page. It’s small, a little over 700 MB, supports English and Japanese, no voice acting though. The nice surprise is that it runs on Windows / Linux / Mac. Download done, and so the journey began.

I just want to say, that journey was genuinely nerve-wracking…

First Impressions of NFC Tags

I’ve known about NFC for ages — my old Sony Xperia Z1 had it — but I never really used the feature.

Okay, not never. I tapped a China Construction Bank card with it once and saw some card info through Alipay, and that was it.

I’d seen NFC tags too, I think Sony made some, but at the time they seemed like a solution in search of a problem.

Still, one of those useless things ended up in front of me as filler for a JD order. In for a penny, in for a pound — might as well try it.
