Lost in Thailand: The Same Dish Served Twice

I did watch Lost on Journey (人在囧途) — last year, or the year before that… sometime around summer 2010, I think. Honestly it was a pretty easy watch: low-budget comedy, and the Xu Zheng / Wang Baoqiang pairing had its moments.

Hands-On Impressions: Logitech Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad

As a no-talent scrub whose only skill is typing, I’ve always wanted to use the iPad as a typewriter. Touchscreens are nice and all, but they just don’t cut it — no physical keyboard always leaves you feeling like something’s missing. So one day, while idly browsing Tmall, I saw a certain Logitech Bluetooth iPad keyboard going for a bit over 200 yuan, down from 600+. Bought it on the spot. 12-12-25 - 1.jpg

Once it arrived, I immediately paired it with my kidney-pad — via Bluetooth, of course. The iPad pairs with it painlessly, and after the first pairing all you have to do is flip the switch to use it again.

PSV Burning Skies: Resistance, Cleared

How do I put this. Overall the game is pretty by-the-numbers. Playing an FPS on the PSV really is a massive step up from the PSP (don’t even bring up PSP FPS games).

Visual detail is lacking—put simply, it looks impressive if you don’t look too closely. And there are texture errors in some spots, which is honestly unforgivable on a console platform (on PC you could at least blame drivers). The difficulty itself is okay, but the weapon distribution is bad. Once you get that three-round-burst rifle later on, you basically don’t want to use anything else… the damage isn’t even in the same league. Even the sniper rifle loses to it.

Aside from touchscreen grenade throws and special weapons, the game doesn’t use the PSV’s rear touchpad at all… disappointing… or you could call it laziness. Also, when the game is yapping away, it doesn’t suddenly make you swipe fruit on the screen—that’s great! Great! Great! Way better than fucking Uncharted! I reloaded like a dozen times in that thing because I didn’t react in time, no joke.

Time Is a Funny Thing

Just had a chat with the old guild leader from my WoW days back when I was a shut-in. We reminisced for a while, then he asked me what the guild’s core raiders are up to these days.

Honestly, I had no idea either… so I looked them up.

Destin Histoire

If I remember right, Gosick was a January 2011 TV anime… I followed it at the time, got through 12 episodes, and since I figured it was just a moe vehicle—plus the April slate was stacked—I dropped it. More accurately: “I had no idea this show was 24 episodes!”

So two years later, while bored out of my mind, I remembered, “Oh yeah, I still have 12 episodes of Gosick left,” and opened the files that had been sitting on my HDD forever.

Watched it in fits and starts over two days. My reaction: I wanted to flip a table. “The back 12 episodes are the actual show!”

Gravity Rush cleared...

Objectively speaking, this game is good. Comic-book art style, smooth action controls, intuitive progression, clear main and side missions. Even the details—the fluttering skirt, the absolute territory and all that—are handled well…though you can’t see her panties…

But this game just isn’t my thing…

Dream Hunter

“What our magazine needs is valuable content. What good are those urban legends you keep digging up?"

The editor-in-chief’s words still echoed in her ears, and Xiaole couldn’t help but shiver…

As a new hire, getting chewed out is just part of the job…

“I have time between 7:30 and 8:00 tomorrow morning. I can do your interview then."

She’d booked the next interview yesterday. The boss said this was her last chance…

She checked her watch. 7:00 a.m. That left 30 minutes to get there. Whether she’d make it, she had no idea.

She thought again of the boss’s yelling… Xiaole sighed… No help for it. She was the newbie, after all. It made her think back to those days of job hunting.

elementary OS 0.2: Two Days In

The UI design is good… at least better than GNOME Shell and those absurdly chunky default buttons and title bars.

The UI borrows heavily from Apple… sure, plenty of things are different, but the Apple influence is blatant. Which is exactly why the UI looks better than the rest.

Sony Walkman F806: My Thoughts

A lot of people, upon hearing I bought this thing, told me I was loaded. I looked at the negative balance on my credit card and smiled without saying a word. Us broke bastards have to pay a price for everything we buy — some people choose to sell the kidney they’ve got now, others choose to sell the kidney they’ll have in the future. The difference is the former’s gone for good once it’s sold, while the latter still has a chance to buy it back.

Walking the line between selling a kidney and selling myself, I keep buying one thing after another that I want. Looking at the E505, S703, and S754 I’ve used before, I feel like I’ve been deeply poisoned by Sony — to the point where if you sit me down with one of those fruit-brand setups, I just can’t adapt at all. Way too bland. I’ve already been trained into a heavy-flavor guy.

Fixing fcitx refusing to start for no apparent reason

The work PC runs Ubuntu 12.04, and lately fcitx just wouldn’t come up. Ctrl+Space did nothing. But if I quit fcitx and started it once from a terminal, it worked fine for the rest of the session.

After screwing around with it for half a day, the culprit turned out to be in .xinit.
