Some thoughts after installing Fedora 17 Beta RC2...

I'm a fake programmer who can read code but can't write it, so I can't say anything too technical. I'm a pragmatist at heart, and I've currently installed Fedora 17 Beta RC2 on both my laptop and desktop. Here are some brief thoughts, in case they're useful to anyone wanting to try it out.

The laptop is a 2nd-gen i3 + 4 GB RAM + Intel HD3000 graphics, and the install went very smoothly. The graphics driver works perfectly, everything’s snappy. The desktop is an i5 750 + 4 GB + ATI HD5770 + Creative Audigy4 sound card. Apart from the closed-source graphics driver not being installable, it’s basically perfect.

Here are some problems and impressions.

  • GNOME 3.4 is a huge step up in stability compared to GNOME 3.2 — at least so far I haven’t hit a single random GNOME Shell reset.

  • GNOME 3.4 has very few usable themes, only one from some Indian dude, and its fonts completely don’t suit Chinese. The old 3.2 themes can sort of be used, but the icons in the launcher get completely messed up. So I’d recommend sticking with the default theme.

  • GNOME 3.4 doesn’t have many extensions, but it’s not like there are none at all. The common ones are already there, and the fcitx plugin also supports GNOME 3.4 now — you can install it by ticking it on that extensions site.https://extensions.gnome.org

  • GNOME Shell 3.4 supports software acceleration — in other words, if you run a 3D game under GNOME Shell, your game performance won’t take a huge hit just because GNOME Shell is there. I ran HoN and the performance was satisfying.

  • For Chinese font beautification on Fedora 17, you can just copy Ubuntu 12.04’s font + etc files over. Remember to make the folders readable. As for the font rendering patch, installing it or not makes no difference; if you absolutely must, you can find a repackaged version from some Russian guy.

  • The fcitx input method is already in the Fedora 17 repos, but it only includes basic dictionary support. If you need more, you still have to add csslayer’s Fedora 16 repo — it’s 16, but it works fine on 17.

  • Intel cards are perfect. I don’t know about Nvidia. For AMD cards, Fedora 17 ships Xorg 1.12, which the closed-source driver doesn’t support, so you’re stuck with the open-source driver.

  • Right after the first install, remember to run yum makecache + yum update immediately — there’s a lot to update.

  • Desktop icons sometimes get misaligned. Press Alt+F2 and type r, or just reapply the style, and they come back.

  • Fedora 17’s Firefox bundles a pathetically weak Flash plugin. The version is low and it doesn’t work — it’s Shockwave Flash 11.1 (yes, 11.1). If you have problems with Flash, remember to disable it.

That’s about all I’ve got for now. Hope it’s useful.

Fixing China Unicom 3G SMS Sending Failures on Android 4.0

Word is Android 4.0 was so new that you often had to set things up by hand just to receive texts.

Dial ##4636## Phone information —— SMSC Look up the SMS center number for your region and carrier (China Unicom or China Mobile). Say the center number is   +86 13 01 07 61 50 0   then your SMSC value is 68 31 10 70 16 05 f0 That is, split it into pairs, swap the two digits in each pair, and pad the last odd one with f. The + becomes 0891. So type 0891683110701605f0 into SMSC, hit Update, and back out to the home screen. Dial ##4636## again, go to Phone information —— SMSC, tap Refresh. If it shows the same number you entered, you can send texts now.

Mindless Madoka Fans, That's Enough

I’m leaning toward being a Madoka hater now. Main reason: there are so many mindless fans that I’ve grown to dislike Madoka Magica more and more. But to hate on it properly, I rewatched the whole thing a while back.

Gotta say, it really is a solid work. Not a masterpiece, but definitely above average.

Fixing Two Xubuntu 11.10 Annoyances

Been on Xubuntu 11.10 for almost two months now, and it’s great. Unity and GNOME 3 are a joke, but Xfce4 is the last clean sanctuary left.

Two problems so far:

  • Thunar is painfully slow the first time you launch it after every boot

  • Double-clicking the title bar doesn’t maximize/minimize

I Got Lucky: I Was There for the Years PC Gaming Blew Up

Finished the book-writing gig my boss handed me today, and I still felt like writing something. I’d promised Yong-dage I’d have a Chrome OS review done today, but then stuff came up in the afternoon and I spent half the day running errands, so it never got written. Guess it’s getting pushed to tomorrow. In the meantime I messed around with a few recent single-player releases—COD8, NFS The Run (sorry, no idea which number this one is), and BF3—about 30 minutes each, then uninstalled all of them. Figured it was worth laying out some thoughts on games, and on missing those school days.

H-hey everyone... I'm not dead yet

Surgery was supposed to be at 9 a.m. the first day. But the hospital had some kind of circular meeting, so they didn’t bother telling me to come downstairs until noon.

Once I got down there, I was told to change clothes myself and wait there, another solid hour of being left on read.

Pre-Op Notes

Got screwed over by the nurses today

Went in for blood work at 6 a.m. and the woman drew three vials!! No wait, four!

They said a doctor would do rounds at 8, so the guy comes over, takes one look, goes “oh, sinusitis,” and leaves.

Then I got left on read in that bed until 11 a.m. I figured it was about time to eat, and right then a nurse walks in and says “don’t move, IV time!”

You couldn’t have stuck me at literally any other hour? Had to be lunchtime? So I got hooked up until 3 p.m.

And when it was done they left a bit of tubing in my hand, “so it’s easier next time.”

Then I’m told to go do the pre-op consult and nasal irrigation.

They inform me that after midnight the night before surgery I can’t eat or drink anything, which means I’ve got about 3 hours left to stuff my face.

After the surgery, apparently my upper body has to stay completely still and I have to lie there for 6 hours — no eating, no drinking, no swallowing spit, no sneezing, no pillow, no XX, no OO, no AA, no BB…

Meanwhile the nurse giving the briefing turns to me with a face gone completely dark and says: after surgery you’ll have a headache, dizziness, head pressure, dry mouth, blood in your spit, etc…

Finally they take me to the outpatient clinic for the pre-op nasal exam. Sprayed anesthetic first, except the idiot got some on my mouth and now my lips are numb. Then I sit there waiting, and half an hour later the stuff has worn off and it’s still not my turn, so the idiot sprays me again — and gets my mouth again, f***!

Had a look with the endoscope: sure enough, polyps inside, and they’re nearly blocking everything. Which raises the question of how I’ve been breathing through two nostrils the size of paper cuts this whole time.

Yesterday the ward could still pick up the yanke1 hotspot, today it’s gone. All that’s left is something called 1#BFL and I don’t know the password. So I’m stuck playing PSP, and from the looks of it, tomorrow while I’m lying there I won’t even be able to do that…

Surgery’s at 9 tomorrow morning, general anesthesia, out like the guy in the next bed…
