Mi Home Ultrasonic Cleaner

I forget exactly when I bought it — sometime around the October National Day holiday, when I joined the crowdfunding campaign.

Honestly I regretted it the moment I backed it. But then I found out, to my surprise:

Crowdfunded items can’t be returned!

And it hit me right then why China’s “crowdfunding” is really just “preorder” and still insists on the crowdfunding label — it’s to stop you from buying and then returning it…

Anyway, it arrived, and it’s not bad:

Fixing Fcitx's Baffling Crashes

Just a few days ago, my fcitx input method started crashing for no apparent reason. Basically, I’d start it up, type a few characters, and it would die.

I dug through the logs and found the problem: it’s related to the fcitx-cloudpinyin module — the “cloud pinyin” thing.

Onaji Class no Idol-san. Around me is full by a celebrity. (同じクラスのアイドルさん) Review

The Japanese eroge maker CUFFS has a whole pile of sub-brands — Sphere, CUBE, miniCUBE, SONORA, and HULOTTE, which looks unrelated but apparently isn’t. I hadn’t touched a CUFFS game in ages. CUFFS games are all basically the same: same engine, same font, same choice-navigation UI, same Duca songs covering everything, same marketing playbook, same coloring style, and… the only thing that really differs is the artist.

So CUFFS games get old fast, because there’s just too much that’s identical. Sure, sometimes they roll out a “story premise” that looks decent, but the actual execution always disappoints. Well, not disappoint exactly — it’s more that there’s just nothing interesting there. CUFFS announces a new title, you look at the character setup and you can already guess how the plot will unfold. Beat the game and sure enough, it played out exactly as you expected. No surprises. If anything it’s less exciting than what you imagined…

Which leaves you with disappointment… emptiness… and self-loathing for wasting your time on this game.

Hands-on: Retro Game 350

I’ve been tinkering with open-source handhelds for a long time. The last one was probably the Retro Game 97 — I reflashed its firmware several times and even swapped the conductive pads. It worked well enough, but I always felt it wasn’t perfect and still had a lot of problems.

So a while back I was browsing the forums and found that a successor to the Retro Game 97, the Retro Game 350, had been released. The price seemed acceptable, so I bought one to check it out.

Making Hairy Crabs at Home

The hairy crabs were a gift from someone, some kind of gift voucher I think — you book through WeChat and then just go pick them up.

I’d never actually cooked hairy crabs before. My wife knows how to eat them, though, so I decided to give it a go myself under her advice.

Fixing the Time Mismatch Between Linux and Windows on a Dual-Boot Setup

Recently, in order to play World of Warcraft Classic, I dug out an SSD portable drive, installed Windows to Go on it, and set up all sorts of software for gaming.

Then I noticed the problem:

The time shown under Linux and under Windows is always different

Truth is, the reason is simple enough. The two systems handle time differently: Linux sets the BIOS clock to GMT 0 (UTC) and works out the local time from the time zone, while Windows just writes local time straight into the BIOS.
