About Firefox's Color Management

I got an HDR screen recently and kept feeling the colors were way too saturated. Then I noticed Chrome didn’t have that problem—turns out Chrome actually ships with color management built in.

But I’m a Firefox guy. What do I do?

Actually, Firefox supports color management too.

Cooking: A Breakfast Method That's Hard to Sum Up in One Word

Lately I’ve been eating the same few things for breakfast and that’s really not ideal, so I decided to develop something new.

Breakfast, well, in a lot of places it has its own specific requirements:

  1. It has to be fast, mornings are short on time.
  2. It has to be balanced, basically you need a bit of meat and a bit of veg.
  3. It has to taste good. If you eat a pile of vomit-like stuff in the morning, your whole day is ruined.

So recently I made this thing I have no idea what to call.

Swapping an HDR Screen into a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017

My ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 has the top-spec WQHD screen, but the next generation, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2018, offered a WQHD HDR panel: 500 nits, glossy, and with a ridiculously wide color gamut. The catch, of course… that config only exists on the 2018.

But the 2018 and 2017 share like 90% of the chassis, and a lot of parts have compatible FRUs—batteries, fans—so the screen should be swappable too. Nobody had tried it, until recently when good news finally showed up on 51nb.

Someone on Taobao was already selling a panel labeled “B140QAN02.0,” and from what I could dig up that’s exactly the HDR panel from the X1 Carbon 2018. As for whether it fits the 2017 X1 Carbon, a guy on 51NB said it could be done. He was in Zhengzhou too, and when I asked he guaranteed a perfect swap—but wanted 830 yuan for the whole job. Since he was nearby he could come do it on-site, the whole process taking about half an hour, with a 350 yuan deposit up front.

Cooking: Bacon-Wrapped Asparagus

Asparagus is a good thing, or at least that’s what I gather from all the foreigners I see eating it for breakfast.

photo_2019-03-29_08-51-05.jpg

Nutritious, not too heavy on calories, and it crunches nicely when you bite in — for a moment there you feel like a panda…

I spent a while figuring out the best way to eat asparagus. Pan-fry it straight? Stir-fry it with rice? In the end I decided bacon is the best match.

Hence this bacon-wrapped asparagus.

Neko Kamisama to Nanatsuboshi -Imouto no Ane- (ネコ神さまと、ななつぼし -妹の姉-) Review

Another day like any other. My little sister comes to wake me up, same as always.

“Big sis, breakfast is ready. Time to get up.”

I’m a guy, but my sister has always called me “big sis.”

“Hey, is it really okay to keep calling you that?”

Just as my sister leaves, a figure slips out from beside me — a girl with black hair, asking me that.

Actually, this “girl” is a cat. And not just a cat — a cat god. A cat god who also happens to be my savior.

It all started two weeks ago.

Kiniro Loveriche -Golden Time- (金色ラブリッチェ-Golden Time-) Review

Heard the industry’s own tumor, minori, is finally closing up shop and quitting games. I was so happy I didn’t write a damn thing all day.

Plenty of people think minori made “masterpieces” like Ef and Eden, that it was a big-name studio worth mentioning, and that its sudden “collapse” (just quitting games, mind you) is somehow sad. But I still say the reason the visual novel industry is in this mess has a lot to do with these so-called “old studios, old stubborn farts” who refuse to die.

Go back to the ancient days, before the concept of visual novels even existed — there was only what they called eroge, porn games, literally. Everything in them existed to deliver porn. Later, as some older studios joined in, the porn ratio in these porn games kept shrinking and the “story” kept growing. As the industry developed, “30% story, 70% porn” gradually turned into “70% story, 30% porn,” and some games even went “100% story, no porn,” becoming true visual novels. The hordes of otaku who’d been secretly playing porn games could finally straighten their backs and announce they weren’t in it for the dirty pictures, purely for the story — and some elite specimens among them even elevated “playing porn games” into an “artistic pursuit.”

So we see a lot of companies wanting to put out all-ages games, to finally operate in the clean light of day, goods out, people in, no longer forced to spend every day side by side with AV, becoming real game development companies.

Sounds like the birth and sprouting of some new art form… except the audience for visual novels was never the general public. It’s otaku who want to see tits and pussy.

Which is why KID, who went all-ages, died. 5pb., who inherited the mantle and wanted to go all-ages, is still desperately clinging to the accidentally successful Steins;Gate. Key puts out all-ages games too, but its output feels like it’s stopped running entirely. minori tried all-ages as well, took a massive loss, and afterward started frantically selling tits and ass to survive.

People always criticize otaku as disgusting — on one hand elevating themselves by saying they play for the story, on the other saying they won’t buy a game without 18+ content. In the end they just want to see dirty pictures. I thought that way years ago too, but now I’ve got a new take:

Sugar * Style Review

I thought about writing some clever, unconventional intro, but then I figured nobody actually reads those closely anyway, so forget it. Let’s just talk about the game.

Installing and Configuring Ubuntu Unity 18.04.2 from Scratch

A while back I went abroad and got to enjoy an internet without the Great Firewall. Then I came home and my laptop started crashing like it had caught a virus. First the DNS service wouldn’t start, then the network died, and finally the kernel panicked. After a whole lot of fiddling I got it barely running, but it felt like the system was on life support. So I decided to reinstall.

Reinstalling is not a simple matter for me, because I run Ubuntu Unity, and Ubuntu has abandoned Unity. There’s no derivative left either — someone did maintain an Ubuntu Unity image, but that maintainer got cancer, and coding from a wheelchair every day is no joke.

In the end I had to rely on myself and install a “clean” Ubuntu Unity 18.04.2 step by step.
