USB Mini Screen Machine Status Display

A while back Taobao had a batch of cheap USB mini screens… sold under the guise of digital photo frames, except you can flash them into USB monitors and then use them to display your host machine’s status externally.

Seiso de Majime na Kanojo ga, Saikyou Yarisa ni Kanyuu Saretara...? (清楚で真面目な彼女が、最凶ヤリサーに勧誘されたら…?) Review

Goddammit, ever since I started playing eroge I’ve learned a bunch of words that never showed up in any textbook. Stuff like yarichin, yariman, and then a while back I ran into yarisā. I’m sitting there wondering what the hell a yarisā even is, and of course I had to look it up, and of course that cost me an entire night of my youth.

Everyone knows (don’t even say you don’t, I won’t believe you) that yariman is the word for a slut, and yarichin is the male version (hell, I don’t know what the good Chinese equivalent is, you can’t exactly call it “black foreskin”), so by analogy, yarisā is a sā of dare demo yareru, where sā is, of course, sākuru—circle in English—which in Japanese katakana means a “club” or “circle.” So put it together and a yarisā is a circle where anyone can get laid, or to spell it out plainly, a “hookup orgy club.”

And while I was looking up yarisā, I found a couple of explanatory posts on Quora. That’s when I learned this word has way more going on under the hood than I thought.

Quora: Some scandals involving Japanese university students Quora: Why do Japanese tennis clubs have such a bad reputation?

Sakura no Mori Dreamers (サクラノモリ†ドリーマーズ) Review

I’d had my eye on Sakuranomori†Dreamers (サクラノモリ†ドリーマーズ) ever since before its release — the premise was dark as hell, the OP absolutely slapped, and going by the description it looked like it was going the horror route. Unfortunately the release got delayed, so I had to push it back on the list. I can’t say playing it felt bad, but it definitely wasn’t pleasant either — though half of that “not pleasant” is in the good direction. If I could get enjoyment out of a horror game, I’d probably be one step away from a jail cell…

This game’s hard to rate. I lean positive, but I honestly can’t point to anything that absolutely backs that up. Maybe it’s just that I personally like this style of game, and it falls “just a hair short” in every direction…

ZMI Power Bank

I’ve bought a bunch of power banks before, but they all ended up with my parents. The only one I kept was a Sony, and my mom took that one too.

Lately my Mojo keeps dying on me, so I figured a cheap power bank for emergencies would do the job. Asked around about what batteries are good these days.

At first my demands were a bit much — USB-C fast charging, big capacity, multiple ports. Twitter promptly woke me up: any battery that ticks all those boxes is 600+ yuan. Might as well buy a 90-yuan one.

JD happened to be running a 199 - 100 promo. I didn’t fall for it and just bought a 69-yuan ZMI, in understated red.

Dbrand Phone Skins

I mentioned before that I bought a dBrand surface skin, and it got lost in the mail once. Which, as it turns out, worked out in my favor.

After the first package went missing and dBrand shipped a second one, they said it’d take at most a week since this time it was going by DHL. A week passed with no word, and when I checked the DHL tracking it showed the thing had gone back to Canada. So I emailed them again. They apologized and said they’d throw in a free skin of my choice—just add it to the cart.

I tossed in skins for the Nexus 5X and 6P without really thinking about it. Didn’t take it seriously at all, didn’t even bother picking colors carefully, just threw them in.

Not long after, the Surface Pro skin actually showed up. Not the second shipment, but hey, I got it—which is what I wrote about last time. The cart thing I forgot about entirely.

And then the damn things actually arrived…

This time I bothered to watch the tutorial videos on dBrand’s site, and honestly I learned a lot. Who knew there was so much technique to slapping on a sticker.

Thanks to those tips, the result turned out okay.

Logitech IS40 Car Mount

I’ve bought plenty of cheap car mounts before, and they all died on me…

So after a friend’s recommendation, I figured I’d buy something a bit nicer. He suggested the Logitech IS40.

The Logitech IS40 mount looks pretty decent, but it still uses the same magnetic approach I’d tried before, so you need to pair it with a metal plate. Fortunately I mostly use it with a Nexus 5X, so a metal plate is fine, whatever. As for magnets messing with phones, the Pixel C and Apple iPad line both have magnets built in and nothing goes wrong, and Logitech’s manual says it’s fine too, so I’ll just take their word for it.

Natsuiro Kokoro Log (ナツイロココロログ) Review

I’ve always figured I don’t really go for that whole “character design” thing.

Which is to say, whether a character is cute doesn’t hinge solely on her looks, or on the artist—building the actual person still takes a CV and a story with some meat on it.

So I’m generally not the type to see a girl in a picture and start shouting “I’d bang that” like some kind of animal.

And I’ve never really gotten the “moe-otaku” crowd, for the reasons above—whether a girl in a game is cute isn’t just about appearance; it’s her experiences, her way of talking, all of it added up that makes her feel like a real flesh-and-blood girl.

It’s a shallow world, but looks alone won’t cut it…

That’s what I thought.

HP DeskJet GT 5820 and Installing It Under Ubuntu Linux

We’ve had an HP all-in-one printer at home forever, but it was bought around 2008 and has been used on and off since then—honestly, not that many times. Recently I tried to use it and it just wouldn’t work: the paper feed roller is fucked, and the thing isn’t worth repairing anyway. Might as well buy a new one.

When buying, I had a few hard requirements:

  1. Good Linux support.
  2. Wireless connectivity—I don’t want cables, and there are several computers at home that all need to use it.
  3. Color printing, and the consumables issue needs to be solved. Buying ink cartridges for the old one was a massive pain in the ass.
  4. Budget around 1000.

After thinking it over, I bought the HP DeskJet GT 5820. It comes with a built-in continuous ink supply system and meets all of the above. I also considered Epson and Canon—why HP? Because its Linux support is the best.
