Killing the Thermal Throttle on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2017 has a CPU thermal throttle at 75°C. Meaning once your CPU hits 75°C it starts downclocking to keep itself under that line. Honestly that throttle exists for a reason — laptop lifespan, stability, all that. My old ThinkPad X250 didn’t have one, and the CPU would just sit at 100°C like it was nothing, until the motherboard died once… But I bought the top-spec i7 model. If this piece of junk throttle is still gimping it, my CPU is basically a cripple. So I had to find a way to kill the throttle. Besides flashing some modded BIOS, there’s a software route.

Reset Linux Root Password

I forgot the root password of my NAS, which is running Debian. After some Googling I found an easy way to reset it.

Enabling OpenCL for Intel Graphics on Ubuntu 16.04.2

So here’s the deal: LibreOffice has this feature where it supports OpenCL acceleration… And you can’t turn that acceleration on, because odds are you never enabled OpenCL support in the first place. Even if you tick the box, it just turns itself back off after a restart. To turn it on you need to install the required packages first, then Intel’s official driver, then edit a config file.

Configuring libinput on Ubuntu 16.04

I’d set up libinput for my touchpad before, but it came with a pile of problems, so I ended up going back to it recently. Writing down the config process. sudo apt install xserver-xorg-input-libinput
