BlueZ

Compiling and Installing BlueZ 5.43 on Ubuntu 16.04.2

BlueZ 5.43 has better compatibility with BLE devices and fewer bugs. Ubuntu Mate for raspberry 16.04.2 backported it, but the official release didn’t. Fine, whatever, guess I’ll just compile it myself. wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/bluetooth/bluez-5.43.tar.xz tar xvf bluez-5.43.tar.xz cd bluezbluez sudo apt-get install libusb-dev libdbus-1-dev libglib2.0-dev automake libudev-dev libical-dev libreadline-dev ./configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var make sudo make install That should do it.

Connecting devices with BlueZ5 on Ubuntu 14.04

I bought a Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Mouse a while back, but as I said, it won’t connect on Ubuntu 14.04 — it doesn’t support Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. Actually the thing is supported in BlueZ 5.0, but Ubuntu 14.04 still ships BlueZ 4.X. So here’s a way to enable BlueZ 5 and Bluetooth 4.0 / LE support. There are sacrifices. After the upgrade GNOME’s Bluetooth management is completely dead and you have to let Blueman take over. If you don’t care, keep reading.
