After I upgraded Firefox to version 55, I found that the old option:
gfx.font_rendering.fontconfig.fontlist.enabled workaround
no longer existed. Without that option I can’t display emoji correctly in Firefox.
There are a few ways to type kaomoji on Ubuntu. Let’s start with input methods — Fcitx’s “Jiong Lian” input method has a fairly unique approach to kaomoji.
You can install a standalone table:
sudo apt install fcitx-table-emoji
Emoji support on Linux is kind of crippled. Most guides tell you to install a bunch of fonts, and the result is still your emoji rendered in that ugly black-and-white style. Low-effort, honestly.
The fix is to find an emoji font that plays nice with Linux. SegoeUIEmoji, bundled with Windows since 8, is one option. The other one I’m covering today is Emoji One.
